NEET-UG 2024 paper theft (Hazaribagh–Patna)
Confidence A — core facts anchored to primary documents (court records / official notices) cited below.
Hours before NEET-UG 2024, Patna police acted on a tip-off and arrested 13 people including four examinees who had allegedly paid Rs 30–50 lakh for the paper. CBI later traced burnt question-paper scraps to a school in Hazaribagh, where the paper was photographed inside the strongroom on exam morning and circulated to solver groups. The Supreme Court found 155 identified beneficiaries but declined a nationwide re-test. Three CBI charge sheets were filed against 40 accused by October 2024; about 49 persons were arrested.

How it surfaced
Who found it
Police tip-off
Patna police acted on a tip-off on exam morning and stopped a car carrying solvers; burnt question-paper scraps recovered from a Patna flat were later matched by CBI to a Hazaribagh school strongroom.
The conducting body's first response
Denied it
The NTA publicly denied any leak for weeks and described the Patna arrests as an isolated local incident; the Union government transferred the case to the CBI on 22 June 2024 after nationwide protests.

What it cost candidates
₹409 crore estimated
The workings
24.06 lakh registered candidates × Rs 1,700 general-category fee = Rs 409 crore in fees alone for one sitting. (OBC/EWS paid Rs 1,600, SC/ST/PwBD Rs 1,000 — the blended figure would be lower; Rs 1,700 is the published general fee.)
Travel, accommodation, coaching extensions and a year of lost earnings are excluded — no national estimate meets the sourcing bar.
no fee refund documented No fee refund was ordered; the Supreme Court declined a full re-test, so most candidates kept their scores.
methodology →per: NEET-UG 2024 information bulletin (fees); NTA registration figures.
